Electric vs petrol scooter: pros, cons and the NIU MQi GT
If you are planning to explore the Costa Tropical on two wheels, sooner or later you will ask yourself: electric scooter or petrol scooter? Both will get you from La Herradura to Nerja or Almuñécar in a few minutes, but the experience, the cost and the logistics are quite different. In this article we take an honest look at the pros and cons of each technology and introduce the NIU MQi GT, the electric scooter that is part of our fleet at Tropical Riders.
Electric vs petrol scooter: what really matters
There is no outright winner. It all depends on how many kilometres you will ride each day, where you are staying (and whether you can plug in) and how you like to ride. These are the key points.
Advantages of an electric scooter
- Quiet. No engine noise and no vibration. Riding the N-340 along the cliffs or into the centre of Nerja in near silence is a different experience, and your apartment neighbours will appreciate it too.
- Zero direct emissions. No exhaust fumes and no smell of petrol, which you notice especially in the white villages and the narrow streets of the old towns.
- Very low cost per kilometre. Charging a battery costs far less than filling a tank, and you never need to look for a petrol station.
- Less maintenance. An electric motor needs no oil changes, filters, spark plugs or drive belts. There are fewer parts to wear out.
- Instant torque. An electric motor delivers its pull from a standstill, which is welcome on hill starts, very common between Marina del Este, La Herradura and Almuñécar.
- Regenerative braking. When you roll off the throttle or brake, some of the energy goes back into the battery.
Disadvantages of an electric scooter
- Limited range. An urban electric scooter covers fewer kilometres per charge than a petrol one does per tank. Longer trips need planning.
- Charging time. Refuelling takes two minutes; charging a battery takes several hours. Charging overnight is ideal.
- Range varies. Steep climbs, passenger weight, sustained speed and riding mode all have a big effect on real-world kilometres.
- Higher purchase price. For buyers, an electric scooter usually costs more up front. When you rent, that difference disappears.
Pros and cons of a petrol scooter
A petrol scooter wins on range and quick refuelling: if you want to link Nerja, Frigiliana, Salobreña and Motril in a single day, you will not have to think about sockets. On the other hand, it is noisier, produces exhaust gases, needs more maintenance and fuel costs more per kilometre.

A closer look: the NIU MQi GT in our fleet
NIU is one of the leading names in urban electric mobility, and the MQi GT is its model for riders who want more than a moped. It is a 125cc-equivalent electric scooter with the presence of a motorbike and the simplicity of an electric vehicle.
Motor and performance
The MQi GT uses an electric hub motor in the rear wheel, with no chain or belt, and offers three riding modes so you can choose between saving energy and a livelier response. Depending on the version, NIU quotes top speeds of between 70 and 100 km/h, more than enough to ride comfortably on the N-340 and the coast roads.
Batteries and range
It runs on two removable lithium batteries with NIU's smart battery management. In our real-world conditions, with the typical hills of the Costa Tropical, we reckon on a range of 60 to 80 km per charge and a full charge in 4 to 4.5 hours. The charger is included, so you can charge it at your accommodation overnight or while you have lunch.
Safety and handling
- 14-inch wheels, giving more stability and grip than the small wheels of many city scooters.
- Front and rear disc brakes, combined with the regenerative electronic braking system (EBS).
- Full LED lighting to see and be seen.
Connectivity
The MQi GT is a connected scooter: through the NIU app you can check the battery level and the vehicle's location, and receive alerts if someone moves it.

Will the battery last for a day trip?
For most plans along the Costa Tropical, yes. With 60–80 km per charge you can ride from La Herradura to Nerja and back, or explore Almuñécar and Salobreña. For longer routes, plan a charging stop or choose the petrol scooter.
Where do I charge it?
From an ordinary household socket, with the charger we give you. The most practical option is to charge it overnight at your accommodation.
Can I ride it on a car licence?
Yes, with a B licence held for more than 3 years, or with an A2 licence, and a minimum age of 24.
Can I carry a passenger?
Yes, the MQi GT is a two-seater. The passenger helmet is rented as an extra.
